Shiatsu treatment

Shiatsu is a non-invasive, gentle therapy and treatment. Through the hands of a practitioner with insight, knowledge and understanding can have profound affects on horses and ponies as well as humans.

Shiatsu is ancient in origin and consistently used in the eastern world. However in more recent years westerners including Doctors and Vets are increasingly recognising and accepting these amazing techniques. Not as an alternative but much more of a complimentary therapy being adopted and applied in harmony to enhance health.

The healing art of Shiatsu uses sensitive physical pressure and manipulation using meridians, stretches and rotations to work on the body's energetic systems to promote health and spiritual well being.

Meridians are condensed energy moving in a regular and recognised path and pattern throughout the body. They connect together to form one circuit of energy, supplying all the cells in the body.

Blockages in meridian energy flow are called Dams - Jitsu. Weaknesses or stagnant pools are called Kyo. These may lead to physical symptoms, psychological and emotional disturbances, an imbalance or simply a feeling that "things are just not as they should be".

Shiatsu uses physical pressure, working with techniques on these meridians to unblock the dams that show as tight, full muscles and areas of stiffness. Shiatsu can also revitalise empty areas which may feel cold, weak, needing to be held for energy (Qi) to do its work.

Shiatsu provides a framework from which the Practitioner can assess (even without the spoken word) the body's energetic state and needs, to explain why the body holds tension in certain areas or points, feeling weakness in others and enable the life force to flow to its true potential.

Meridians have specific relationships to the skeletal anatomy, organs of the body and are grouped into five elements according to their energetic associations.

The five element theory is based on observations of nature with everything in creation established within five states: water, wood, fire, earth and metal.

Interaction of the five energies:

  • Water - brings wood to life - by moistening.
  • Wood - provides fuel for fire.
  • Fire - provides ash to nourish soil/earth.
  • Earth - provides elements to forge metal.
  • Metal - vitalises water by permeating it with minerals which enhance its life giving properties.

Shiatsu (shi) - fingers, (atsu) - pressure, the natural tools used to embrace and develop from within, the ancient art of Shiatsu therapy for the betterment and well being of humans and horses.
